Auto Salvage Business Expert Ron Sturgeon Offers Salvage Yard Owners Path to Better Profits
Sturgeon to facilitate peer benchmarking groups for auto recyclers and to share insights from his new book.

FORT WORTH, TX, October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 1999, Ron Sturgeon sold the salvage operation that he had grown from one employee to one of the largest in United States to Ford for 8-figures. In 2003, he and two partners purchased his yards and the rest of Ford's 1000-employee, 15-state salvage division and returned it to profitability, before selling to a 2 billion publicly traded company in 2005.

"Right now margins on used auto parts are shrinking and competition is intense," said Sturgeon. "The only operators who will survive are measuring results and looking for better ways to do business." Sturgeon insists the winners will do more than race against their own past performance.

In the mid 1980s, Sturgeon and a dozen other salvage yard owners started to meet twice a year in peer benchmarking sessions to share their performance metrics and best practices and to evaluate one another's strategic plans.

"I made a million dollars every year for seven years from just one idea I got from being a member of that original peer benchmarking group for auto recyclers," said Sturgeon. Sturgeon learned that another owner had started selling warranties on used auto parts and followed suit, years before the practice became standard.

"I don't know what the next million dollar idea in auto salvage will be, but I do know that it will most likely come from the salvage yard owners who are peer benchmarking, measuring performance, comparing results and sharing best practices," said Sturgeon.
